White Sox manager Tony La Russa out indefinitely with medical issue

Chicago White Sox manager Tony La Russa will be sidelined indefinitely with a medical issue.

The White Sox announced the news on Wednesday in a statement:

“Following a medical evaluation this morning, Chicago White Sox Manager Tony La Russa now is scheduled over the coming days to undergo additional testing in Arizona by his personal physicians. His absence from the club will be indefinite pending the results of these evaluations.”

The White Sox have not disclosed the nature of La Russa’s medical condition. La Russa missed Tuesday’s game against the Kansas City Royals “at the direction of his doctors,” according to the White Sox. They announced prior to the game that he was slated to undergo further testing and declined to provide further details about his status.

Bench coach Miguel Cairo managed the team against the Royals and will continue to do so in La Russa’s absence.

“We are going to keep him in our thoughts, and hopefully everything is fine,” Cairo said of La Russa after Tuesday’s game.

La Russa, 77, is in his second season managing the White Sox. A Hall of Fame manager with three World Series rings, he returned to the dugout in 2021 — 10 years after he last managed in MLB for the St. Louis Cardinals.

He spent 16 seasons in St. Louis, managing the Cardinals to three NL pennants and two World Series championships. Previously, he managed the Oakland A’s from 1986 to 1995 and a prior stint with the White Sox from 1979 to 1986. The A’s won three straight AL pennants under his watch from 1988-90, including a World Series championship in 1989.

White Sox manager Tony La Russa out indefinitely with medical issue
White Sox manager Tony La Russa will be out indefinitely as he continues to undergo tests for an unknown medical issue, the team said Wednesday.

The plan will be to monitor the manager’s test results. He will undergo the tests in Arizona by his personal physicians. The team will base his potential return on the results of the tests.

The 77-year-old missed Tuesday’s game vs. the Royals after the team announced the manager would miss the game just an hour before it started. In La Russa’s absence, bench coach Miguel Cairo will take over as interim manager of the team.

“We are going to keep him in our thoughts and hopefully everything is fine,” Cairo said, via ESPN.

La Russa is currently in the second year of his three-year contract with the White Sox. In the almost two seasons so far, the manager has totaled a 156–134 record.

He previously managed the White Sox from 1979 to ’86. La Russa even earned American League Manager of the Year in ’83.

White Sox manager Tony La Russa out indefinitely with unspecified medical issue
Chicago White Sox manager Tony La Russa did not manage Tuesday night’s game against the Kansas City Royals at the direction of his doctors, the team announced about one hour before first pitch. Prior to Wednesday’s game, the club announced that La Russa is out indefinitely.

“Following a medical evaluation this morning, Chicago White Sox Manager Tony La Russa now is scheduled over the coming days to undergo additional testing in Arizona by his personal physicians. His absence from the club will be indefinite pending the results of these evaluations.”

La Russa, 77, held his daily pregame media availability as scheduled Tuesday, roughly three hours before the game. The nature of his medical issue is unspecified. Bench coach Miguel Cairo will serve as manager during La Russa’s absence.

The White Sox have lost five straight games and 10 of their last 12. They entered Wednesday with a 63-66 record that puts them six games out in the AL Central and 7 1/2 games behind the third and final American League wild-card spot.

La Russa has received criticism for Chicago’s disappointing season, though there are no indications a managerial change is on the horizon. White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf brought La Russa back to the organization prior to last season and essentially handpicked him for the job.

When it comes to individual accomplishments during the 2022 Major League Baseball season, our attention has mostly been trained on Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees and his pursuit of 61 home runs and Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals and his advance toward 700 career home runs. Now, though, it’s time to spend some bandwidth on Pujols’ teammate Paul Goldschmidt and his designs on winning the Triple Crown.

1. It’s been a very long time since a National League player pulled it off
For the uninitiated, the batter’s Triple Crown is achieved when a player leads his league in batting average, home runs, and RBI in the same season. It’s an exceedingly rare feat, as you might expect. Here’s a look at who’s pulled it off:
